FURNITURE | An Architect Explains
Furniture is household equipment designed for a variety of purposes. It may be made of wood, metal, plastics, marble, glass, fabrics, and related materials. It ranges from the simple pine chest to the elaborate gilded console table. It is usually movable, though it can be built-in, like kitchen cabinets and bookcases. The design and building of furniture is related to both architecture and interior design. Throughout history the functional and decorative aspects of furniture have been influenced by economics and fashion.

Listed here under the following headings, are some of the Guidelines for the design of furniture and placement of furniture. As an Architect, I have explained each of these guidelines under the following headings:

This is a really interesting collection. Furniture plays such a big role in how a space functions, not just how it looks. I’ve noticed that when the right materials and hardware are used, furniture lasts longer and performs better, especially in Indian conditions. It’s good to see furniture being discussed beyond just design and also from a usability point of view. Nice read 👍
